Do you think I would lose FB friends if I posted this?

Grace battles gluttony year-round and therefore feels awkwardly ambivalent about Thanksgiving, a day focused on a feast…oh, and football. Grace also admits an aversion to American gridiron for a variety of reasons, namely the sexism, commercialism and violence embodied in the sport. True confessions.

I must admit Thanksgiving food is some of my favorites, but I am 100% with you regarding football. There's 29 of us this year for Thanksgiving dinner, and I can already see all the guys crowded around the television. No thank you.

I totally get the commercialism and violence, but not the sexism.

Bleach blonde sideline commentators, cheer leaders in various states of undress, cameras periodically zooming in on every attractive female fan sitting in the stands, a preponderance of commercials for Axe body spray, Budweiser & their ilk making ample use of nubile, willing young ladies . . . some of the sexism might be subtle, but it is definitely there. Guys are just so used to seeing it we don't think about it.

Try this experiment - turn the volume off and count every time an attractive woman or sexualized image of a woman comes on the screen. If you make it a drinking game, you'll be WASTED by the end of the football game.

Weight Watchers taught me that Thanksgiving is NO problem! Turkey is great! Eat the delectable dishes in moderation and gorge on fruits and vegetables. Even pumpkin pie is OK. Maybe you need to leave the crust behind...
Happy Thanksgiving, Grace!

I had a grad prof (whom, by the way, I did not care for at all) who made the case that American football is actually a ginormous (my word) sexual metaphor. "Touchdown," "pass," "tight end," "penetration," (okay ... I'll stop.) I'll be thankful that football fails to hold my attention and that I'll be in the other room giggling with my sisters instead.

Aaaah Thanksgiving, sweet community with family and friends wins every time... in spite of sexism, commercialism and violence... sorry but the glass is half full. I focus on the "thanks" and "give".

PS If you loose friends over this, they weren't friends to begin with.
