SAD: Seasonal Ambivalence Disclosure

Am I the only one who doesn’t really relish the start of summer vacation?

Most of my mom-friends on Facebook are posting chipper status updates, like: “Summer’s finally here—woo-hoo!” Or, “Got great report cards from the kiddos—now it’s time to tend my gorgeous garden, then take a quick dip in our refreshing pool before heading to [insert fun event here] with my super-cute, well-behaved children.” (Sorry for the sarcasm—I guess I’m just now-not-so-secretly jealous of mothers whose domesticity so obviously exceeds my own.)

For me, summer is no less stressful than any other time of the year. I enjoy the warmer weather (when it’s not too warm), but life goes on as usual, with its work pressures, household duties, and the added layer of lamentation: “Momeeeee, I’m borrrrred! Be my entertainment committee.”

I don’t mean to be a Grinch about this supposedly relaxing time of year (am I whining?), but I honestly don’t find the livin’ especially easy in the Summertime . . . I do, however, like the song: Click here to hear Fantasia's fantastic rendition.

I think that the moms that do those staus are moms that don't work full time, thus they do not have the added stress of having to find sitters, etc.
I am a mom who loves summer because of the warmer weather and the mornings that aren't rushing a kid out to school who got up late, can't find a shoe, the homework that didn't get printed and now the printer is acting funny.....
I have always hated September for the very reason that school starts then. Then college came along and ruined August for me too! I do love having the kids home (now I am down to ONE!) but I have never had the worries about more sitter time, etc.
I do see your point. The one thing that I did way too late was decide that anything that could slide in summer, LET IT SLIDE! Make the most of any opportunity to just hang with the kids...accept as many invitations as possible. Learn to relish the summer, because around here it is way too fleeting!

I agree with you Grace! We (in the Northeaster States, at least) have such high expectations for summer vacation. We have so few weeks of truly good weather during which time we try to fit a lot in...summer reading programs, backyard BBQ's and swimming at the beach. As the parent of small children summer brings on a new set of battles for us...sunburn, mosquitoes, children playing dangerously close to the road, etc.

My older boys and their dad head to Scout camp for a week - leaving me to do all of the animal chores, mowing, AND figure out babysitting.

I also cheer for Sherrie's comment...do try to relax and be present enough to enjoy those special summer moments with the kids.
